Turkish on the way to becoming an official language in EU

The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK) announced on Wednesday that it has taken considerable steps toward the Turkish language being included among European languages in an electronic environment, underlining that Turkish will become an official language of the European Union.

As part of the EU's European Research in Action Seventh Framework Programme (FP7), TÜBİTAK has put forward its Multi-lingualism Integrated to Speech and Audio Understanding (MULTISAUND) project, which is software for the Turkish language to be involved in areas of the electronic environment, from speaking to acoustic encoding and speech synthesizers to professional translations.
Alper Kanak, a researcher at the TÜBİTAK National Research Institute of Electronics and Cryptology (UEKAE), said their aim is to position Turkish among the world's most prestigious languages. Speaking to the Anatolia news agency on Wednesday, Kanak noted that they had been working for years towards Turkish featuring at an international level.
Pointing out that their center has high standards in its technological policies, Kanak stated that they have been working on a project over the last decade to prepare software to provide translation from other languages to Turkish and from Turkish to other languages.
Kanak also said that the MULTISAUND project has been accepted by the European Commission for Turkish to be situated among many European languages, including English, French and German, which are dominant in European countries, underlining that TÜBİTAK is the sole research center in Turkey involved in this project.
"The European Commission accepted MULTISAUND as part of its FP7 projects, indicating that TÜBİTAK, where more than 1,500 researchers work in 15 different branches, has gained its trust. Thanks to this project, the Turkish language is going to be one of the European languages, taking the place it deserves," said Kanak.
Established in 1963 with a mission to advance science and technology, TÜBİTAK is the leading agency for the management, funding and conducting of research in Turkey.
The MULTISAUND project was started last year. "This project plays an important role for us and the future of the Turkish language. With this project, Turkish has gained the right to be among the European languages. As an example, imagine a navigation device that has common languages such as English, French and German. In addition to these languages, Turkish will also be added to the navigation device's language properties. People who do not know foreign languages will not lose their way when abroad as the navigational devices will have Turkish added. In addition to this, people will have a chance to translate Turkish sentences into other languages," Kanak said.
Kanak pointed out that their project has attracted interest so far from 11 research centers, including six research centers abroad. TÜBİTAK's vision is to be an innovative, guiding, participatory and cooperative organization in the field of science and technology and can cooperate with foreign officials in information exchange regarding the MULTISAUND project.
"We aim to establish a technological bridge between East and West. Turkish people will have a chance to take part in international platforms even if they do not know another language. Our project is so important that it cannot be ignored," Kanak said, adding that with the MULTISAUND project, language problems will be minimized.
